ZG4620 Prototype Light Utility Helicopter hovering over the flight line in the morning at Aero India 2021. The LUH is intended as a replacement for the IAF and Indian Army’s Chetak and Cheetah helicopters. The LUH features a glass cockpit, is in the 3-ton category and powered by a single Shakti 1U turboshaft engine developed from the Safran Ardiden 1U. It has a service ceiling of 6500 metres. U717 A classic aircraft of Training Command flies past at Aero India 2019. First flown on Sept. 4, 1964, the successful Kiran was designed and built by HAL as a basic jet trainer. The first Kiran Mk.Is with the RR Viper 11 turbojet were inducted in the IAF in March 1968, equipping the Flying Instructors School (FIS) at Tambaram. Production was switched to the Mk.IA with hardpoints under the wings, and later to the Mk.II with a 18.728kN RR Orpheus 701-05 turbojet for Stage-II training of fighter pilots. (more of U717)

UR-UKR Getting ready for departure after Aero India 2021 comes to an end, where it was on static display. Previously registered to Ukraine International Airlines and Antonov Design Bureau, the aircraft now operates with the Ukrainian Government. The regional jet is powered by Progress D-436-148 turbofans with a clearance of 1.65 m. allowing for operation from unpaved runways. The forward passenger door comes equipped with built-in stairs. 62-3553 As the light fades, it’s an all-American affair on the far side of the ramp as the KC-135R of 909 ARS Young Tigers based at Kadena Air Base is pushed back after Aero India 2015 comes to an end on the last day. The R designation started in the 1980s as existing KC-135 engines were replaced with CFM-56 turbofans. KF104 Upgraded from the H variant, this Mirage 2000I of No. 7 Sqn. Battle Axes stands on static display at Aero India 2021 on a hot day. Formed in 1942, the Squadron has been in the thick of things during World War II, 1965, 1971 and Kargil. It was the first IAF Squadron to be equipped with the Mirage 2000 or Vajra in 1985, named after the divine weapon of Indra. The Battle Axes proved decisive over Kargil in 1999 with their pinpoint bombing accuracy to destroy Pakistani positions on mountain tops. (more of KF104)

CU2780 Bison on static display at Aero India 2021 on a scorchingly hot afternoon. This airframe is the last upgraded MiG-21 Bison that was handed over by HAL to the IAF at the end of 2020, marking the successful completion of the MiG-21 upgrade project. Earning itself the sobriquet Falcon Slayer, the Bison of Wg Cdr Abhinandan Varthaman shot down a PAF F-16C on 27 Feb 2019 before being shot down in turn. Though the numbers in IAF service are dwindling, its presence at the airshow was still eye-catching. (more of CU2780)
